We No Longer Know the Truth
Don’t let that defeat us

We have collectively lost our minds.
The first thing I read this morning was a story of anti Black Lives Matter protesters in Red Deer Alberta yelling at an Indigenous man to go back to where he is from. Really? It turned violent. The RCMP watched. Really?
Also in the news:
A sitting US president says he won’t leave office if he doesn’t win, because the only way he can lose is if the election is rigged. Ho hum. There he goes again.
A country that has 614 billionaires, also has 30 million people without health insurance, and far too many of them think Trump is going to get it for them. They are missing one key piece of information. His party only supports life before someone is born. After that, you are on your own.
200,000 people in the United States have died from Covid 19, and wearing a mask is what you are all still fussing about? I think you should also take a stand against authority and stop using your turn signal. Sure, more people will die, but you should be able to change lanes whenever you want to without prior indication.
Where is the outrage. Where is the attempt by congress and the senate to take action to prevent a civil war? Are there really that many people so concerned about getting re-elected that they won’t act on principle?
Many of us are just curled up in the fetal position at home hoping this all goes away on November 3rd. The rest are blindly following Fox News on social media.
I remember when Walter Cronkite used to say at the end of his CBS news broadcast; “that’s the way it is” …and it was. I am sure there was bias, and he wasn’t exactly the definition of “woke”, but news was news. There wasn’t a major “news” channel in the US dedicated to supporting Richard Nixon.
As happens too often when I look at these issues, I look back to a time when I thought things were better. This makes me incredibly uncomfortable as it falls right into Trumps message of making things great again.
I don’t want to go back to times when issues of white supremacy, systemic racism and gender equality were even worse than they are today, or to a time when we did an even poorer job of looking after the environment. But…, there are some behaviours I would like to see make a comeback.
Perhaps it is natural to wish for what we perceive as a simpler time. Our political leaders used to talk to on another even if they didn’t always agree. They used to eat meals together. I think they used to want the best for their citizens. They talked to reporters, and even formed friendships. They all had jobs to do, but they were still people. Not anymore.
Lying isn’t a new thing for politicians, but when they were caught, they would admit it. Now they either just deny it, or they just repeat the lie louder.
Information came at us slower back then. If you didn’t catch the 6 o’clock news, or read the newspaper, you didn’t get the news. Now you are instantly bombarded, and everyone can be a reporter including those wishing to manipulate.
We have more information than we’ve ever had. We no longer know the truth.
Don’t let this defeat us.
